Sports Medicine Fellowship (Family Medicine)

Our Sports Medicine Fellowship offers excellent training in Primary Care Sports Medicine in the Mountain West with a mix of rural and peri-urban populations. Fellows will also have a significant role in the care of NCAA-D1 FCS athletes and teams. 

It is a one-year intensive learning experience designed for Family Medicine Physicians who wish to enhance their Sports Medicine skills. 

Fellows generally start the 3rd week of July each year.

Clinical Duties

The fellow should expect:

• Involvement in the care of NCAA-D1 athletes in the ISU athletic programs as well as local high school athletes and teams
• Procedurally-rich training in ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal procedures and diagnostic ultrasounds
• Advanced training with an interdisciplinary team approach in primary care sports medicine, orthopedic surgery sports medicine, foot and ankle orthopedics, hand and wrist orthopedics, physical therapy, athletic training, sports dietetics, sports performance, and sports psychology
• Opportunities to provide care for outdoor and wilderness events at ski resorts and adventure-based sports and recreation events
• Teaching experience in supervising residents in sports medicine clinics

Research Training 

• Fellows are encouraged to participate in research through the various collaborating academic departments involved with the fellowship (sports medicine/family medicine, physical therapy, athletic training, exercise physiology, sports psychology, or sports dietetics)
• Fellows will be required to complete scholarly activity and present at a local, regional, or national meeting

Apply:  Applicants may apply through the AAMC ERAS application service during the July cycle. 

Interview Timeline: July / August each year

Fellows typically start in late July the following year. 

Applicants must be: 

1. A third-year resident in an accredited Family Medicine residency, or
2. Board-certified or board-eligible in Family Medicine
3. Mid-career physicians looking for additional skills or a career change are welcome to apply 
4. Licensed or eligible for licensure in Idaho State
5. Current ACLS certificate
6. We cannot support J-1 visas

1. CV
2. Three letters of recommendation, including one from your program director
3. If you are more than two years out of residency, a letter from a senior colleague or supervising physician / medical director may be substituted for the program director letter
4. Personal Statement outlining your inpatient experience to date, and why you want to pursue this training
